What tis this side bar in the scheduler and why I can't hide it?

The ability to drag and drop from Spotlight, Overdue, or Unscheduled directly to the daily planner is fantastic. However, I wonder why this sidebar takes up about one-third of the screen and why we can’t hide it when we don’t need it.
